Was ein Trip! English Version:
Dear English readers. Thanks for finding you way to my page. I will do my best to add english versions to all articles and posts but it might take a while. This trip right here was one of the best I ever made. I decided to go to Tolmin in Slovenia, to meet up with some friends from Finland to attend a 1 week metal festival called Metalcamp, situated right at the banks of the Soca River. Yes that means that while listening to bands you could go the the beach bar and jump in the blue water of the river! Since I am based in Cologne and I didn't want to ruin my tires on ze Autobahn I decided to take the "Autozug" to Austria. My bike was loaded on a train trailer and I had a bunk bed in a cabin in the front. Waking up in Austria, kind of rested, with sunshine and a nice trip ahead was a great feeling. My route took me from St.Johann im Pongau to the South of Eastern Austria. In a Village named Villach I took an old pass crossing the east end of the alps ending up in Kranjska Gora. From there I entered the Slovenian part of the Alps where a curvy uphill street soon led me to the start of the river Soca which is by far the most beautiful tone of greenish blue I have ever seen in my life. Following the Soca downstream I passed a town called Bovec and after many more beautiful corners and of that scenic route I ended up right in Tolmin, where my finnsih friends were waiting with - SURPRISE - Alcohol and BBQ! During the days of the festival I had plenty of time to explore the surrounding area as the music program only started in the evening. I didn't ride every day, due to hangovers or other activities such as riding the Soca on a cheap air mattress until you get washed to the shore right at the beach bar. But the days I went out on the bike alone were peaceful and exiting at the same time. Heading to the mountains, visiting the Predil Lake on Italian territory, or just making turns on one of the countless mountain streets with almost no traffic was the best thing to do while down in Tolmin the heat started rising. What I love about riding alone is that you are more likely to meet new people along the way. After I took a wrong turn a road that was indicated as concrete in the map turned out to be a rock path that spit me out in a small slovenian village in the middle of nowhere. At first I felt like in a horror movie, just waiting for my murderers to capture me and no one would ever find out but of course it turned out the exact opposite: A man started yelling at me from a garden next to the riverside where I was taking a brake after a 5 km decent on rocks and sand. German as I am I thought I might have violated the Slovenian parking restrictions but I was wrong. The guy was the owner of a parked GSX-R and despite a huge language barrier we had a motorcycle "conversation", he offered me some grilled sausage that tasted delicious and after that I found out the locals are very fond of riverjumping! Note: don't do cannonballs from a slovenian brigde. After the festival, on my way back to the train in Austria I took a detour to ride the "Großglockner Hochalpenstraße" which is one of the oldest, longest and most important passes in the alps. It was amazing to pass the snow and ice in the higher alpine and I had a delicious Strudel at the mountian top restaurant. It was an incredible trip that I will probably never forget. Yet I have only scraped the surface of what the alps have to offer in summer - to say it in the words of an Austrian Classic Character: "I'll be back!" If you should get to experiece europe on a bike and need more detailed information feel free to drop a line. I can provide tips, recommendations and maps and I am always down to ride!
